PANHANDLE PIGSKIN POWER RANKINGS: WEEK 1
First, a little intro: Monday, the Daily News’ sports section is rolling out a brand spankin’ new prep football page as part of two weekly pages dedicated solely to the area prep coverage we all love.
Every Monday from here until the end of football season, you will find last week’s scores, next week’s schedule, a little color from yours truly and weekly power rankings of every team in the area. These rankings will be based on the success each team is having and not necessarily head-to-head matchups (because we know Baker is great but probably not great enough to beat Crestview).
Meanwhile, Wednesday’s edition will feature a page dedicated to the coverage of all prep sports that don’t involve an oblong leather ball. You know, the “other fall sports.” Volleyball, cross-country, golf, swimming. You name it, we got it Wednesday because we in the Daily News’ sports department are committed to featuring all of our great athletes on the Emerald Coast whether they wear helmets, Jordans or speedos.
Now let’s get down to rankings.
No. 1: Baker (1-0)
All right, I know what you’re going to say: “But Sam, you were at the Crestview game. You witnessed the carnage firsthand. The Bulldogs sent those Naders back to the trailer park from whence they came. How are they not No. 1?”
And to you I would say, “Really? ‘Whence?’ We’re using ‘whence’ in conversation now?”
But in all seriousness, Matt Brunson and the Gators are more than deserving of this spot. Including Friday’s 42-0 victory against Holmes County, they’re 55-9 over the past five seasons with three straight trips to the Final Four and a state championship appearance in December 2016. For those counting at home, that’s an 86 percent winning percentage, and the Gators looked every bit the part against the Blue Devils.
No. 2: Crestview (1-0)
No kidding, I heard this snippet of gameplanning while roaming the Jack Foster Stadium sideline late during Friday night’s blowout:
“Who can we put in that won’t score?” asked one coach, only half joking.
Next thing you know, third-string quarterback Marquis McCoy took off for a 70-yard touchdown scamper. That’s how stacked this squad is.
I tried valiantly to offer myself up as tribute, knowing full well I was the man to not lead Crestview’s potent offense, but there weren’t any takers. Alas, my athletic career will continue to wait.
No. 3: Navarre (1-0)
Just like the other teams atop this list, Navarre did what good teams are supposed to do against inferior opponents.
The Raiders were deadlocked with Catholic at 7 with minutes to play in the first half; they had struggled to run the ball and laundry had littered the field. Then Quinn Caballero hauled in a pass along the sideline and raced 31 yards into the end zone for a 14-7 lead, and the rout was on.
No. 4: Rocky Bayou (1-0)
Yep, you read that right. No, you don’t need new glasses.
There is only one team in the city of Niceville with a winning record in 2018, and it’s the Knights. Aaron Grabinger had three touchdowns, Zach Balthazar blocked a punt for a touchdown an snagged an interception.
After two years with a combined 3-15 record, it’s time ride this high as long as it lasts.
No. 5: Niceville (0-1)
For the same reason Baker debuts at No. 1, Niceville gets to come in at No. 5.
Sure, a 27-15 loss to Lincoln at home is startling, but the Eagles haven’t missed the playoffs in 17 years. This is likely just a speed bump on the highway to success.
No. 6: Choctaw (0-1)
The Indians trailed Tate 21-7 at halftime. They scored 14 points in the fourth quarter. They also gave up seven, but you have to admire the fight in Greg Thomas’ crew.
No. 7: Fort Walton Beach (0-1)
The Vikings opened fast with a 50-yard strike for the game’s first score before mistakes turned the tide and left the Vikings playing catch up in the fourth quarter. There were positives, like Jamison Brundidge’s seven-catch, 111-yard, two-touchdown performance, but there were also too many shades of last year’s inconsistent team.
No. 8: Freeport (0-0)
The Bulldogs didn’t play this past week, their game against Vernon getting called off in the 11th hour due to some shady behind-scenes stuff. They did go 5-5 a year ago, though, so No. 8 doesn’t feel so wrong.
No. 9: South Walton (0-1)
Positives: South Walton forced four turnovers Friday night. Negatives: South Walton gave the ball away four times Friday night.
No. 10: Walton (0-1)
Pitching a shutout is awesome. Getting shut out, not so much. Getting shutout 49-0 makes your skin crawl.
