BAKER EYES 4TH STRAIGHT WIN OVER SOWAL
Entering tonight’s showdown at the Hawk’s Nest, South Walton and Baker share little in common.
Baker is 1A. South Walton is 4A.
Baker’s prolific offense, featuring just 15 passing attempts from Payton Rockwell, is predicated on the legs of Junior McLaughlin, the senior rushing for 203 yards per game and 13 touchdowns to lead a ground game averaging 259 yards per contest.
South Walton’s offense, averaging just 72 rushing yards per game, is predicated on the arm of Drake Roberts, the junior averaging 264 passing yards per game with 10 touchdowns.
Baker is allowing less than seven points per game, has yet to allow more than 14 points in any contest and has three shutouts.
South Walton has given up 25 or more points three times, although their 19.7 points a game allowed is respectable.
Baker is coming off back-to-back-to-back Final Four appearances. South Walton last made the playoffs in 2014.
That just so happens to be the last time the Seahawks bested the Gators, who have won the past three contests by a combined 105-44 margin
Regardless of their differences, each program is set up well in the playoff polls.
Baker is seeded third behind Jay and Vernon, two programs the Gators beat, in the Region 1-1A FHSAA Power Rankings.
South Walton is seeded fourth behind Rutherford, West Nassau and Raines in the Region 1-4A Power Rankings.
The Gators enter tonight riding a 26-game regular-season win streak, their last loss coming to Liberty County way back in 2015. Of all the Final Four qualifiers, including the crew that advanced to the state title game in 2016, this may be Matt Brunson’s best.
No team has played the Gators to within a score, four of the six wins coming by running clocks. Vernon, ranked No. 2 in the Power Rankings, was the closest in a 19-6 loss at Doug Griffith Memorial Stadium.
As prolific as the offense has been, featuring a depth of playmakers with Rockwell, McLaughlin, Derek Peoples, Bradley Inscore and a dominant offensive line, the defense is a key reason for the dominance.
The Gators, led by Joseph Brunson’s 38 tackles and five sacks, has 14 sacks and has forced 16 fumbles and recovered 10 of them. Trey Kolmetz has a team-best four fumble recoveries to accent 36 tackles and Shawn Mcleod has forced and recovered three fumbles.
