FHSAA POWER RANKS HAS 5 AREA TEAMS IN REGIONAL PLAYOFFS

There’s an eerie calmness to this week’s prep football scene. Crestview, Navarre and Niceville are off. South Walton and Freeport have joined forces for a non-competitive, charity game after their games were canceled. Meanwhile Fort Walton Beach’s trip to Bay and Walton’s visit to Chipley have been postponed indefinitely. The only games in town are Northview visiting 7-0 Baker and Oak Hall coming to Meigs Middle School to face Rocky Bayou in a North Florida Football Conference tilt. Meanwhile Choctaw travels to Leon Thursday night. With that in mind, Tuesday’s release of the FHSAA Playoff Power Ranks proved to be a breath of fresh air. Five area teams pretty much locked up into playoff spots will do that. Baker has long been a shoo-in, and now Crestview, Navarre, Niceville and South Walton can start gearing up for mid-November football. Yep, book it. For Matt Brunson’s crew, a fourth straight Final Four looks more and more likely by the day. After all, the Gators are 7-0 and outscoring foes 215-47. That includes three shutouts, six running-clock wins and zero games where the Gators have been played to within a score. The Gators, well ahead of Vernon (37.40) and third-place Jay (36.43), host fourth-place Northview (4-3) Friday night for a 7 p.m. kickoff after being off last week. In Region 1-6A, second-place Niceville (7-1, 2-0) has built a cushion over fourth-place Navarre (7-1, 2-0) and fifth-place Crestview (6-2, 2-0) with 42.50 points and trails only Escambia by .07 points.
