FHSAA FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS ARE LOOMING

Well, Week 10 sure cleared up the football playoff picture. Navarre (8-1, 3-0) cruised past Gulf Breeze (7-2, 2-1) in a 40-12 rout to shore up a second straight District 2-6A crown and the No. 1 seed in the Region 1-6A FHSAA Power Ranks. Crestview (7-2) handled Niceville (7-1, 2-1) comfortably in a 63-33 victory to shore up a District 3-6A three-peat and homefield advantage in the region quarterfinals. South Walton, meanwhile, routed Bozeman 39-14 to improve to 5-4 and punch its playoff ticket. Paired with an idle Baker (8-0) and the Eagles’ impressive playoff résumé, that makes five area programs assured of a regional playoff spot. Tuesday’s FHSAA Power Ranks – the second to last of the season – reinforced that. Headed into the final week of the regular season, Baker and Navarre rank first in their respective classes. Baker, the proud owner of a 28-game regular-season win streak and three straight Final Four trips, has a 1.12-point cushion on Jay (4-4) headed into Friday’s regular-season finale against Graceville at Douglas Griffith Stadium. Just as Baker has wrapped up a district title, Junior McLaughlin has already wrapped up a second straight offensive Player of the Year nod for Small Schools. The senior tailback is averaging 237 rushing yards per game and 11.6 yards per carry and has found the end zone 23 times. Navarre’s lead in Region 1-6A is .55 ahead of second-place Niceville and 1.33 over third-place Escambia, but those two programs are district runners-up and will drop to the 5 and 6 spots after next week. The Raiders’ 1.44 cushion over district 1-6A champ Pine Forest and 3.11 cushion over District 3-6A champ Crestview pretty much guarantees the Raiders of the No. 1 ranking headed into the playoffs. Offensively, the Raiders and Bulldogs feature the most prolific crews in the Panhandle. Navarre quarterback Marlon Courtney has completed 62 percent of his passes for 1,718 yards and 14 touchdowns and has run for 279 yards and two scores. He’s spread the love to a slew of receivers, reigning Player of the Year Dante Wright catching 30 passes for 554 yards and six touchdowns, Tyler England hauling in 31 receptions for 465 yards and four scores and Quinn Caballero with 27 catches for 417 yards and five scores. In the Raider backfield, Chris Williams has a team-high 721 yards and 10 scores, Josh Carter has 275 yards and eight touchdowns and Wright has 180 yards and seven scores. For Crestview, senior quarterback John Gillis has 1,072 passing yards and 13 touchdowns compared to just two picks and senior Jack Corbin has added 725 passing yards and 10 scores. Senior Devin Voisin leads a deep receiving corps with 773 all-purpose yards and eight touchdowns on 24 catches, followed by twin brother Jaden with 29 catches for 535 yards and six scores and sophomore Marquis McCoy with 727 all-purpose yards and six scores. In the Crestview backfield, Jay Stanton is averaging 181 all-purpose yards per game to accompany 23 touchdowns. On the outside looking in are Choctaw, Fort Walton Beach, Freeport, Rocky Bayou and Walton, the latter three just one spot from sniffing the playoffs. Despite beating Chipley (3-4) straight up, Freeport (3-4) trails the Tigers by .72 points for the eighth and final playoff spot in Region 1-1A. Last week’s 30-26 loss to second-ranked Jay could loom large for the Bulldogs, who host (5-4) Northview in the regular-season finale. Chipley closes out with Holmes County (2-6) at home Friday night. Rocky Bayou (3-5) is ranked seventh, the Knights trailing Munroe by .61 points for the sixth and final playoff spot in Region 1-2A. They travel to Oak Hall (5-4) on Friday before finishing the regular season with a North Florida Football Conference foe yet to be determined. Walton (0-8) may be winless, but the Braves are still mathematically alive in trailing Andrew Jackson by just 1.50 points for the sixth and final playoff spot in Region 1-4A. The Braves host Bozeman (2-5) in the regular-season finale. Eliminated from postseason play are Choctaw and Fort Walton Beach. The Indians closed out a 3-6 season last Friday with a 54-20 win at crosstown rival Fort Walton Beach, which finished the season 1-8. Both programs had their games against Bay canceled due to Hurricane Michael.
