BRAVES BEAT A TIRED SOUTH WALTON
Gavin Coone tossed in 23 points to lead the Walton County Braves in a 56-45 win over a fatigued South Walton Seahawk boy’s basketball team Tuesday night at the Hawks Nest in Santa Rosa Beach.
Coone made six field goals, one 3-pointer and was six of seven from the free-throw line.
Kentrell Parker also hit double-digits for the Braves with 11 points.
South Walton had one player in double figures. Spencer Burden knocked down three 3-pointers on his way to 17 points.
South Walton Coach Craig Smith said it’s been a tough go as of late for the Seahawks. After playing four games last week, two already this week with two more to go, he said his team is tired.
“They are just worn out ... mentally and physically,” Smith said. “All of us are beat up.”
He also said with their game schedule, they haven’t had time for practice or preparation.
“We’ve just got to get some practice time ... it’s all on me,” Smith said.
In Tuesday’s match with the Braves, Walton stepped out to a 19-9 lead in the first quarter with Coone working the boards for eight points, plus picking up fouls along the way for a total of 13 points.
In the second quarter, South Walton outscored the Braves 11-9. Barrett Waldrop put a rebound back for two for the Hawks, and then Walton scored. South Walton’s Burden hit his first trey of the night. The Braves, however, answered with a 3-pointer of their own from Jakobe Campbell. In the last few minutes the teams swapped basket for basket with the Braves leading 28-20 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Seahawks closed it down to a four-point game with Burden knocking down a 3-pointer early and then coming back with a jump shot followed by a baseline shot. The Braves came roaring back with Coone nailing a trey and then putting a rebound back for two. South Walton’s Dylan Hebert hit a layup. In the last minute, Walton scored a basket and hit three free throws, while South Walton’s Cade Rowland swished a 3-pointer. Walton led 43-34.
The Braves made a little five-point run on the Seahawks early in the fourth and the Hawks just couldn’t close it back down.
South Walton will be playing in the Cats Against Cancer Tournament in Paxton this weekend. They play Paxton at 6:15 p.m. Friday and then Baker at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday.
Walton is also playing in the Cats Against Cancer Tournament. They play Pleasant Home at 7:30 p.m. Friday and then Paxton at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
