NORTH BAY HAVEN BUCS KNOCK OFF SEAHAWKS

With four players in double digits, the North Bay Haven Buccaneers of Panama City came to town and knocked off the South Walton Seahawks 61-48 in varsity basketball action Monday night in Santa Rosa Beach. “Biggest thing is they come out and hit all their shots and we can’t hit anything,” said South Walton Coach Craig Smith as he walked off the court. “I just didn’t have my guys prepared like we needed to be tonight, it’s all on me,” Smith said. The four Bucs in double figures were Wesley Wilmot with 24 points, Michael McLaughlin and Corey Turner each with 11, and Tevin Royster with 10. South Walton had only one player to reach double digits: Spencer Burden with 12 points. In the first quarter, South Walton had a good start with a couple of take steals for points from Barrett Waldrop, Burden and Dylan Hebert. South Walton’s Jordan White and Alex Kilpatrick each scored for a 10-8 lead. At that point, the Bucs went to work and scored on a long shot, then drained a pair of 3-pointers plus a free throw to go up 17-10. By the buzzer, the Bucs led 18-11. In the second quarter, the Bucs outscored the Seahawks 18-11 with Wilmot leading the way with a 3-pointer, a pair of baskets and a free throw. South Walton’s Burden drained a couple of 3s down the stretch, but the Seahawks trailed 36-22 at the half. The Seahawks scored first in the third on a take away and bucket from Burden. The Bucs however answered with six straight points for a 42-24 advantage. By the buzzer, North Bay Bucs were up 49-34. In the fourth quarter, it became a battle inside for the ball with the Bucs taking it up and getting second and third shots. South Walton went to the foul line a couple of times plus knocked down a pair of 3s, but it wasn’t enough. “It got physical inside ... we just didn’t have our heads in the ball game,” Smith said. Up next for the Seahawks is a 7 p.m. game Thursday against the Arnold Marlins on Panama City Beach.
